Why do you need a NSW boat licence?
To drive a powered vessel recreationally on NSW waterways at 10 knots (18.5 km/h) or more, you need a NSW general boat driving licence.
Whether you’re completely new to boating or already have plenty of experience, our NSW boat licence courses make the process straightforward. We’ll take you through the required boating safety training and official knowledge test.
You must be at least 12 years old to hold a NSW boat licence. Applicants aged 12 to under 16 can obtain a young adult licence, which has additional restrictions.
To obtain your licence, you’ll need to successfully complete the official knowledge test and meet the practical boating experience requirements recorded in your logbook. New applicants generally complete three supervised trips with an eligible licence holder.
