The purpose of this course
The purpose of this course is to open the eyes of new skippers to what can go wrong during a seemingly safe boating trip. Our education focuses on ways in which you, the skipper, can make changes to poor habits and execute simple actions to ensure your boating trip is a safe one.
We hear too often in the news about yet another boating accident or fatality that could have been avoided. Over the 30+ years we’ve been providing safe boating education, it’s become abundantly clear us that taking responsibility through planning and executing small, hassle-free steps goes a long way to ensuring a safe trip.
Syllabus covered in this course
During this course, we hope to pass on our extensive knowledge through 8 key chapters, so you are left with a understanding of your role in ensuring the safety of your vessel, passengers and other waterway users.
We don’t want you to just do this course to pass the licence test. We want you to this course to understand your role, the responsibilities of being the skipper and how you can have a safe boating trip.
This course not only covers the syllabus units but also goes beyond in some key areas that we believe are the major contributors to boating safety. These units are:
- Carry out trip preparation and planning
- Safely operate a small mechanically powered vessel
- Respond to boating emergencies and incidents
There are many subtopics within each of these units, and these are covered through the various chapters in this course.

Attempting the licence exam
Option A
VicRoads testing: Simply turn up to any VicRoads centre in Victoria for instant licence testing. You can do this anytime, using this course to get the knowledge to smash the test. Immediately get your licence. It’s common for students to take Option A as it is a faster option.

Option B
Zoom revision + testing: Complete this full training course then attend the comprehensive meet and greet zoom revision and testing session, which will take about 2 hours after this course’s education. Certificate will be mailed to you so you can take it into VicRoads to purchase the licence.
For those seeking a deeper dive into maritime safety and responsibility, we offer an exclusive personalized Zoom revision & testing session (Option B). This 2 hour meet and greet experience allows you to meet your trainer, discuss complex case studies, and attempt the licence exam with us instead of VicRoads. It is the ideal choice for students who want to go beyond the basics and gain maximum educational value from their training.
To get booked in, finish this course as soon as possible. You’ll then be eligible to view the available testing calendar and get booked in. Testing sessions run most Tuesdays at 10:30am, please allow 4-6 weeks for available testing sessions.
