Give way to your right when boating.

Hint: Try drawing the boat from a top down perspective. You'll notice that if you can only see the red sidelight, it must mean the vessel is on your right, thus you give way.

Sailing vessels don't always have right of way.

Any type of vessel overtaking must give way if needed, regardless if it is a powered vessel or not.

You only have a limited number of flares onboard, there's no point wasting them when no-one is around to see them.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for signs of other boats and planes. When there's a chance of your flares being seen, ignite them to alert them to your emergency.

Whilst your first instinct would be to render immediate assistance, you should only monitor your marine radio to ensure the distress signal is being picked up by emergency services.

If shore stations don't respond, relay the message and only after that if they don't respond should you start to render assistance.

Leave it to the professionals where possible.

Submarine cables are underwater cables used for telecommunications, such as phone and internet lines.

They will be marked by a Submarine Cable sign, which will indicate that you must anchor at least 200m away.

When you're travelling downstream, the markers will be on the opposite side of your boat compared to when travelling upstream.

Try to remember the phrase "Upstream, Red Port Left".

When travelling upstream, red port is on left. In this question, we've turned around and are heading downstream - it's the opposite. So the red channel marker is now on your right.

Lifejackets save lives.

When operating in open waters, or crossing a coastal bar, a lifejacket with greater protection must be worn due to the increased risk associated with the waves and weather.

Wear a level 100 or greater lifejacket if you are boating in those areas.
